Bohemia Saxophone Quartet is a top professional ensemble of four musicians with the highest ability of interpretation of diverse types of music; all of them are also teachers at music institutions. Their brilliant, surprisingly colorful technique, balanced, yet distinct sound, creative original arrangements of music of a wide ranging repertory have helped them, ever since the foundation of the ensemble in 1990, to conquer not just concert halls or jazz stages, but also theatres or alternative scene.

Bohemia Saxophone Quartet performs

  • rich classical and jazz repertory for a saxophone quartet 
  • transcriptions of music of most diverse types of genres, styles and authors of different historical periods (Bach, Händel, Mysliveček, Mozart, Dvořák, Smetana, Martinů, Janáček, Gershwin, Bernstein); most of the arrangements have been made by the members of the quartet 
  •  contemporary music by Czech authors (Petr Graham, Pavel Novák-Zemek, Alois Piňos, Emil Viklický, Miloš Orson Štědroň, Lukáš Hurník), often tailor-made for this particular ensemble
  • contemporary music by foreign composers (Michael Nyman, Harald Gundhus, Trygve Madsen, R. Volkman), often dedicated to the ensemble

Participation in Contemporary Art Projects

Bohemia Saxophone Quartet have been closely following current art developments and have actively taken part in some of them

  • a concert program with the Affetto experimental vocal ensemble
  • a concert program with the Bona Fide Tango quintet and Soňa Červená
  • a CD with the Brixi Academic Choir 
  • a participation in the theatre project “Velký sešit: Singspiel” by Miloš Orson Štědroň 
  • a concert program with the Moens chamber ensemble 
  • a collective concert with the Brass 6 brass ensemble 
  • a participation in the National Theatre of Prague performance of “Karel Hynek Mácha.rip” (music by Marko Ivanovič) 

International Achievements

Bohemia Saxophone Quartet have also performed: 

  • at major international music festivals (Prague Autumn Strings, Prague Spring International Music Festival, Concentus Moraviae, L´Octobre Musical de Carthage, Hofkonzerte im Podewil Berlin, Sächsisch bömisches Musik Festival, Festival of Nations in Tennessee, International Contemporary Music festival Contrasts in Lvov, Klangspuren in Innsbuck, Dresdner Saxophonemesse, 3éme stage d´interpretation et de virtuosite Saxiana in Paris)
  • apart from many European concert tours in the USA, Israel, Jordan, Tunisia, Lebanon, Indonesia and Kuwait
  • as finalists of the competition IX. Concours International de Musique de Chambre in Paris

 Educational Activities

  • Bohemia Saxophone Quartet have been intensively involved in promotion of the Czech contemporary music, and have regularly performed compositions of contemporary Czech composers in concert cycles of distinguished Czech music societies Umělecká beseda, Společnost českých skladatelů (Society of Czech composers) and Přítomnost
  • Bohemia Saxophone Quartet have done seminars and master classes both in the Czech Republic and abroad (Paris, Oslo, Lvov)
  • Bohemia Saxophone Quartet have put together a cycle of concerts “Saxophones in Czech music” (a special selection of compositions for 1 – 4 saxophones by Czech composers) for The Year of Czech music 2014, with leading Czech musicians as special guests
  • BSQ on the occasion of the 25-year existence anniversary of the ensemble extended to a 12-member saxophone orchestra under conduction of Marek Šedivý
